2-day virtual immersions to reflect, reimagine, relearn and retell climate narratives

through a nexus with the Global Goals

are FREE online programs where individuals can reflect and unpack their own climate narrative while connecting with others to reimagine and retell a collective vision for the changing world around us.

Harnessing an experiential learning approach, each Pod is an interdisciplinary experience that will engage participants — through storytelling, collective visioning and collaborative communication practices — to personalize the relevant challenges of the climate crisis. Complemented through two days of interactive dialogue sessions with action & thought leaders and on-demand multimedia content on critical topics within the climate crisis.

YOU ARE THE KEY.

Each of us holds responses. Perspectives that can unlock new realities and catalyze new visions for today. Participants will engage alongside peers to explore and unpack their own climate stories. Contributing to a new unfolding collective narrative for new times.

PODS METHODOLOGY

Our PODS are developed based in 4 main components:

  • STORYTELLING PRACTICE

  • LIVE DISCUSSIONS

  • MULTIMEDIA CONTENT

  • POST-POD PATHWAYS

WHAT'S YOUR CLIMATE STORY

Facilitated storytelling and collaborative practices to curate reflection and narrative building.

Pods are constructed to be a brief introduction to connect participants to their climate stories. Combining reflective practices and storytelling activities individuals will have an opportunity to witness and contextualize their feelings and insights into how they approach topics as abstract and often opaque as those within the climate crisis.

Further listening and engaging with the stories of others will further enrich this process along the expedient 2-day course.

With the goal: to give people more space and resources to document and share their experiences with the unfolding climate crisis.

STORIES FROM

ACTION & THOUGHT LEADERS

Invited guests will join the Pods to share their stories and how these narratives are inspiring their actions and work.

Sessions are conducted as keynotes as well as live roundtable discussion sessions facilitated collaboratively by youth moderators and Pods participants.

With the objective to sensitize, learn and

feel through listening to other people

from all over the world personalize topics of the climate crisis.

ON-DEMAND CONTENT

Throughout the course on-demand online resources —climate change learning materials, skill-based courses, active listening and creative writing activities, and more—will be available and shared with Pods participants.

Intended to complement and enhance the learning throughout the short course and, moreover, after.

Supporting the ability of participants to choose among tools that can support further learning and interaction on these critical climate topics. Additional guidance from Pods coordinators is available through either YCL or Climate Advocates.

RELEARN a future present

POST COURSE ENGAGEMENT

The Pods are simply a stepping stone to a larger journey. Each participant will be presented with a curated list populated by options for follow-up opportunities to continue developing themselves and support on how to put their knowledge in action. Ultimate objective that each participant leaves a Pod eager and equipped with clear actionable steps to continue their journey.

PAST

JULY - AUGUST 2020

SEEDS OF CHANGE FROM THE BIG APPLE

Living through a crisis within a crisis can get overwhelming. COVID-19 and climate change are inextricably linked. In these Climate Pods, New York City is the stage as participants from across the City and the world will interact with new perspectives from this creative capital. To get inspired and feel empowered to take actions both large and small in their communities.

  • LIVEABLE CITIES

    JULY 23-24

From a focus on NYC, the Pod will explore questions from how can creating resilient cities to the impacts of climate change support more equitable societies?  to what are the tools that communities need to take action?  Through action and thought leaders sharing stories from the field on fostering regenerative actions, mobility, rethinking waste, public policy, community health, and multi-stakeholder coordination.

  • WATER

    JULY 30-31

How do we use water? What does water mean to me? To my community? In this Pod, we explore the nexus between climate change & water by touching on the unfolding water crisis, global drivers of health and inequality as it pertains to water, community-driven solutions and market-based solutions

  • CONSCIOUS CONSUMER

    AUGUST 27-28

Explore the stories intertwining with our consumption. How everyday choices have a greater impact than many of us think. What is my relationship to my consumption?  Where does it come from? How does consumerism contribute to the climate crisis?

This Pod will feature stories within the fashion and food industries, along with voices on topics including circular economy, sustainability versus regenerative, fashion & human rights, and more.

CLIMATE IMPACT & MITIGATION OF THE PODS

Considering participation will be online emissions from these courses will be limited. However, one four letter word that we don't often give much thought is increasingly having a more significant impact on the climate and our environment... data. In the interest of educating and empowering informed choices here is an impact snapshot from all that data we use.

When calculating our carbon footprint, the impact of data storage is normally not one we are used to seeing. Although, data centres already use an estimated 200 terawatt hours (TWh) each year (that is more than the national energy consumption of some countries, including Iran or the UK). With data centres alone contributing to around 0.3% of overall carbon emissions. But when grouped with the information and communications technology (ICT) ecosystem as a whole—encompasses personal digital devices, mobile-phone networks and televisions—the impact greatly increases, accounting for more than 2% of global emissions. Putting data + ICT’s carbon footprint on the same level with that of the aviation industry’s emissions from fuel!

Because this program involves online engagements and data, there will be a carbon footprint from emissions of this project. To take steps to offset this, we are committing to:

(1) educate participants and our communities of the impacts of their data usage, (2) work with partners to organize mitigation strategies and activities so each of us can have a clear pathway to calculate our 'online' carbon emissions and ways to reduce or offset these. So we can “walk the talk”.
