Launched in 2018, YCL provided an epic international journey to its first cohort. It all started in Paris, where the first YCL Immersion kicked off in July. From there, we went to Kenya for an one-month program combining visits to local and international organizations, personal and professional development, and a group project in partnership with Endeleza. From there, participants could also sign in for two optional components of the program: Field Placements with partner organizations to further their professional training and access to the annual UN Conference on climate change through our COP 24 Delegation. Ximena did it all and her 6-month journey finished in Poland, where she was part of the YCL COP 24 Delegation of 11 young people. Below is her testimonial about this unique experience:
''After being selected as a YCL Fellow, I instantly realized that I wanted to attend the 24th Conference of the Parties (COP24) as this old dream suddenly did not look too difficult to achieve. It was in that moment that the YCL coordinators tried to get me an NGO badge. However, given my prior professional experience, I was able to obtain my badge directly from my country Delegation (Argentina) and, in early October, my preparation for my first COP started.
While working in the countryside of Kenya, I reached out to people who had previously attended the conference, so that I could hear and learn from their experiences. Thanks to this research, I was warned about the hustle of those two weeks ahead of me.
When December arrived and I was traveling to Poland, I received a call that was a turning point for my expected two weeks of COP. Every year, the General Management of Environmental Issues of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs selects a person from civil society to help them during COP, and this year I was the one selected.
Therefore, the two weeks of COP24 were a job for me. I had the chance of knowing my country delegation and helping them in anyway I could, with meetings, logistics, etc. It was tiring, but very fulfilling. Although I could not participate in any of the youth activities or in the NGO pavilion, I did not feel like I missed out on anything since I was experiencing the conference as official representatives do. My amazing group of friends, that I met during my YCL journey, also helped me not to miss any of the other activities that were happening at the same time of the negotiations. They sent me messages with key points, event summaries, pictures and videos. They were the best!
I believe that there are still so many changes politicians should commit to do. We need a radical change, and this will only be achieved by the fight of our youth. Therefore, the UN initiative with the “people’s seat” was one of many other future awareness campaigns we need to push for political decisions to embrace a real change in economic development.
Certainly, I want to attend the conference again and continue building up my knowledge in the international negotiations area. I want to be part of the young generation that contributes to the changes needed to save our planet''.

Um relato sobre a participação na COP 24 - por Ximena Michemberg.
Lançado em 2018, o YCL proporcionou uma jornada internacional épica para sua primeira turma. Tudo começou em Julho de 2018, em Paris. De lá, fomos ao Quênia para um programa de um mês, combinando visitas a organizações locais e internacionais, desenvolvimento pessoal e profissional, e um projeto de grupo em parceria com a Endeleza. A partir daí, os participantes também poderiam se inscrever para dois componentes opcionais do programa: colocações de campo com organizações parceiras para promover sua formação profissional e acesso à Conferência Anual das Nações Unidas sobre mudança climática através de nossa Delegação COP 24. Ximena fez tudo e sua jornada de 6 meses terminou na Polônia, onde fez parte da delegação COP, composta por 11 jovens. Abaixo está o depoimento dela sobre essa experiência única:
''Depois de ser selecionada como YCL Fellow, percebi instantaneamente que queria participar da 24ª Conferência das Partes (COP24). O sonho que tive por tanto tempo não pareceu muito difícil de alcançar. Foi nesse momento que as coordenadoras do YCL tentaram me incluir na delegação do YCL. No entanto, dada a minha experiência profissional anterior, consegui ser incluída na delegação da Argentina e, no início de Outubro, minha preparação para o COP começou.
Enquanto trabalhava no interior do Quênia, entrei em contato com pessoas que haviam participado anteriormente da conferência para que eu pudesse ouvir suas experiências.
Quando Dezembro chegou e eu estava viajando para a Polônia, recebi um telefonema que foi o ponto chave a para as minhas esperadas duas semanas de COP. Todos os anos, a Gerência Geral de Assuntos Ambientais do Ministério das Relações Exteriores seleciona uma pessoa da sociedade civil para ajudá-la durante a COP, e este ano fui selecionada!
Portanto, as duas semanas da COP24 foram de grande trabalho. Tive a chance de conhecer a delegação do meu país e ajudá-los de qualquer maneira que eu pudesse, com reuniões, equipe de logística, etc. Foi cansativo, mas muito gratificante. Embora não tenha participado de nenhuma das atividades para jovens ou no pavilhão de ONGs, não senti que perdi nada desde a conferência, como fazem os representantes. Meu incrível grupo de amigos, que conheci durante minha experiência no YCL, também me ajudou a não perder nenhuma das outras atividades que estavam acontecendo ao mesmo tempo das negociações. Eles me enviavam mensagens com pontos-chave, resumos de eventos, fotos e vídeos.
Eu acredito que ainda há tantas mudanças que os políticos devem se comprometer a fazer. Precisamos de uma mudança radical, e isso só será alcançado pela luta da nossa juventude. A iniciativa da ONU ''People's Seat, foi uma das várias outras campanhas de conscientização que precisamos para impulsionar as decisões políticas para abraçar uma mudança real no desenvolvimento econômico.
Certamente, quero voltar a participar da conferência e continuar desenvolvendo meus conhecimentos na área de negociações internacionais. Eu quero fazer parte da geração jovem que contribui para as mudanças necessárias para salvar nosso planeta.''
